ABOUT US

OUR STORY

449ec447-487c-4a35-bcbd-fde0cc5ffc58.jpg

Boban and Lizzie first met while both were working in Zanzibar in 2013. Boban had just finished refurbishing a Zanzibari Dhow and had started a successful locally run business taking tourists out on cruises which is still running today. Lizzie was volunteering as a doctor in the nearby hospital. As hard as it was to leave such an amazing place the couple relocated to Lizzie's home village in the Highlands in 2015. Lizzie to complete her training as a GP and Boban passionate about whisky and starting his own distillery. Along the way they have been delighted to be joined in their adventure by Isaac now age 7, Shoko the chocolate Labrador and in 2019 little Zoe. Having travelled together in Africa, Holland and Spain Boban and Lizzie had a chance to experience different types of hotel and accommodation and understand what was important to them to feel comfortable, welcome and connected to the place they were in. The aim of the Birdwatchers' Cabin is to give travellers the utmost comfort whilst bringing them back to nature, to have the chance in a busy world to reconnect with themselves, with the earth, with fire, with water and with air.

The Birdwatcher's Cabin in a luxurious one bedroom cabin set in the magnificent Scottish highlands. The property is positioned on the shores of Loch Fleet, in a corner of the Balblair woods, with outstanding views of the water and all of its feathered guests. The position gives guests the unique experience of watching an abundance of Scottish wildlife, from Pine Martins and Red Squirrels to Ospreys and Terns, all from the stylish comfort of your private cabin.

This charming wooden structure has one large studio area incorporating the kitchen, living, dining and sleeping area. Large patio doors stretch along one wall of the property ensuring you are never deprived of the fabulous views. The kitchen area is well-equipped and stocked with all the basics, including tea and coffee. There is a wall mounted television which has satelite and freeview but the soundtrack to your stay will surely be the sounds of the sea birds, year round residents include Eiders and Scottish Crossbills and, during the summer months, watch Ospreys and Terns fish in the Loch.

A large deep sofa is ideal for cuddling up on after a day exploring the woods and, of course, the cabin wouldn't be complete without the wood burner keeping guests cosy throughout the seasons. The bedroom area has a large and stylish wardrobe/storage unit offering plenty of space to store clothing. The double bed looks directly out onto the Loch, so, come bedtime, slide between the crisp linens, turn out the lights and enjoy the magnificent 'nothing'. There is no light pollution, no noise, just a blissful uninterrupted deep restful sleep to be enjoyed. Come the morning, guests wake refreshed but spend that extra time in bed, relaxing and enjoying the sounds and sights of Lochside life. A cot can be provided.

Local Caithness slate has been used in the shower room and beautifully compliments the handsome wooden interior. There is a rainfall shower perfect for scrubbing up in after muddy walks over the hills. The Birdwatcher's Cabin has everything you need for a wonderful stay without guests having to venture much further than the raised deck to the front of the property but the area offers plenty to see and do.

Wow, what a gem! We absolutely loved staying in this beautiful cabin. The accommodation is cosy and stylish, the location is stunning, and Lizzie and Boban are wonderful, generous hosts. It was the perfect place to unwind after a long day's walking. I really hope I will have the chance to stay here again one day. Highly recommended!

We were lucky enough to be the first guests in this beautiful cabin and we had the most amazing time! The cabin is so roomy, cosy and perfectly kitted out - it has everything you could possibly need and more. Everything felt very luxurious and the log burner was definitely a highlight! The location of the cabin is so peaceful, has lovely views and plenty of walks and places to explore surrounding it. Lizzie and her husband were the perfect hosts, with lots of handy tips and info. We will definitely be back!

What a beautiful little cottage in the middle of a nature reserve. Lizzy and Boban were very friendly and welcoming. The cottage is very spacious and comfortable, the bathroom is very stylish and the bed provides a great and relaxed sleep. No need to say the only thing you hear are the birds, and at night it is absolute silence. We absolutely enjoyed our stay here, such a shame it was only one night. Our dogs loved the loch, to run around and explore, meet their friendly brown lab and tell him to get off their property. Sorry, Choco! Overall this is a very comfortable place to stay, return and definitely recommend.

GETTING TO THE CABIN:

To get to us you need to turn right of the A9 at Kirkton farm a few miles south of Golspie. Come down the road over the railway crossing and all the way to the trees. Come through the open gate and turn right at the bottom, you will pass a bird hide on your left keep coming and take the left at the fork in the track. The cabin parking is on the left next to two Scots pine trees just before you get to our house. There is a short path that leads to the cabin from there. We are also on google maps.
